1980's- 2000's
As we approached the last section
in the book we can see how rapidly public schools have changed and the
percentages of students attending and graduating increased dramatically. Even
though the nation has changed a lot for the better we still have more work to
do with public schools. We see how everyone has now a higher chance to succeed
and how diverse public schools are. A statement that stood out to me the most
on page 193 is “It is poor people who typically get trapped in bad schools and
can't afford to do anything” This statement is accurate because people who have
money can afford to send their child to private school and by their house at a
better location. In previous class we have had discussion on how test taking
can affect children. In my opinion I don't find it fair because people are
simply not good test taker and publishing scores for the public to see can make
a child feel bad a cause them self-esteem.
I agree we should take tests in
order to see where we stand as a nation, but depending on a test score whether
you pass or fail or go to a certain college is not right. Some people may
disagree because they like competition, but not everyone's the same. People usually send child to private school for a better education and for a child to learn about religion. Mostly families with a higher income were able to send their children to private schools and in 1966, low-income students in Cleveland, Ohio became the first in the nation to use vouchers to attend religious schools. Years later around 6 thousand children were enrolled to private school with the help of the voucher. As more children started to enroll in school violence increased. The books stated, “More than 200 shooting deaths occurred in American schools in the 1900's.” This is a situation that is still controversial until this day and it says a lot about security in the school system. As time goes by some things never change. Children are 100 percent our future and after the major Parkland shooting students from the high school gathered to protests, talked to politician, created marches, and did what ever they can to have their voice out and create change. Many of innocents lives are taken every day due to shootings. Since this topic is all over the news not only can this create ptsd for the victims, but it can also cause ptsd for watchers. Every day high school’s students go to school wondering if a tragedy is going to occur since school shootings are now a “trend”. My sister and her friends were telling me every time they enter a class they look around the classroom and think where would they hide in case something like this does happen. From the early 1900’s to now a lot has changed for the better and majority of students are enrolled and graduating.
